When
Can I Tune My Engine? |
Comments: Can
I adjust my engine settings as soon as I start it or should I race for a full tank first
before I change the fuel settings?
Response: You should never tune a
nitro engine until it is at its full operating temperature (the temperature at which the
engine peaks at and will remain at indefinitely if no other variables change). It
usually takes 2 to 3 minutes of normal driving conditions to bring an engine up to full
operating temperature.
Initially
upon starting your engine it is good to let it idle for a minute or so to warm it
up. It will be necessary to "blip" the throttle every once in a while to
prevent the engine from "loading up" (similar to flooding the engine, it is an
excessive fuel build up in the crankcase). After the idle warm up period, drive your
car around the track taking it easy for the first lap or so. After your slow warm
up lap, RIP ON IT!!! Drive the car as if you would in a race. Do this for a
good 2 minutes. After your idle warm up, easy lap, and 2 minutes of hard driving
your nitro engine will be up to full operating temperature. At this point you can
take your engine temperature and make any adjustments.
I hope this helps,
Let's take off a few tenths per lap,
