What Does A Two Speed Tranny Do?

Comments: What does a 2 speed transmission do to an electric car (run times, speed, etc.)?

Response: Generally speaking a 2 speed tranny will increase both your cars acceleration and top speed. It does this by using a very high gear ratio while the car accelerates to a certain speed at which time the tranny switches to a much lower ratio to offer a very high top speed.

An analogy may be this. If you are familiar with a standard transmission on a full size car. An RC car with a standard tranny is always in 2nd gear (as a comparison to a full size car) which offers reasonable acceleration and top speed. An RC car 2 speed tranny is similar to accelerating in 1st gear in your full size car and then switching to 3rd gear. This will provide a faster acceleration and more top speed.

The run time comparison will remain close to the same with a 2 speed tranny as compared to a regular tranny. If anything you may increase the run time because of increased efficiency but this does not take into account the added rotating mass of the heavier 2 speed tranny.
