No More Pull Starter

Comments: I Have an RC10GT with an OS15 CVX Pull Start.  I have so far bought bearings, CVD's, Boost Bottle, Temp. Gauge, new head, 17T clutch bell, 60T spur gear, 4 in 1 clutch, aluminum screw set, and minor other upgrades.  I was wondering what else I can do to really improve my top speed.  I was thinking of getting rid of my pull start and getting a starter box, what do you think?  I'm lost, I want to really beat my friends truck because we drag race them often so I wanna smoke him off of the line.

Thanx

Response:  It is a great idea to loose the pull start setup and use a starter box.  This will reduce the drag within the engine since there will be one less bearing to turn over.  There will also be a slight weight decrease from getting rid of the pull starter unit.  If you want to go completely nuts, you can buy the non-pull start motor mounts and fly wheel to lower the center of gravity of your car as well.  Note, the crank shaft on the pull start engine is different than the one in a non-pull start engine (there is an extension on the crank pin to drive the starter unit).  You can either replace the crankshaft or carefully grind off the little extension with a grinder.  You must also buy a non-pull start back plate and gasket set.

I wouldn't buy too much else for your truck, you seem to have most of the available upgrades already.  I would just practice now and experiment with air/fuel mixture settings to gain a slight edge over your competition.

You seem to have conflicting goals.  You said that you wanted more top speed and then you said that you wanted to smoke your friend off of the line.  You can't have it all!  If you want to go faster at top speed, put a larger gear on your clutch bell or lean out your top end mixture a bit (don't forget to richen the bottom end a bit to keep the engine temperature the same).  If you want more acceleration, install a smaller gear for your clutch bell or lean out the bottom end mixture (you must then richen the top end a bit).

Comments 2: Thanks for the reply.   I am now really going to consider getting rid of the pull start.  I've heard that you can buy a buttsink that incorporates the pull start shaft.  My other question would be, is that starter box a hassle to use?

Thanx

Response 2:  I did not know that a "buttsink" would incorporate the extended crank pin. If that is the case, get it.  It will solve two of your problems (the extended crank pin and having to purchase a regular backplate).

I personally hate pull start units!  I love starter boxes.  Every time I go to the track, I place my car on a box and push down on it with the glow igniter while "blipping" the throttle on my radio with my free hand and my car starts every time with out any problem.  I then look over and see some guy "yanking" like crazy trying to get his pull start engine going.  I just don't like "manual labour" too much.  Go with the electric starter box, it is better for performance anyways.  Don't get me wrong about pull starts, they are more convenient than a starter box.  They are very useful for many drivers.  I am just a hardcore racer (I don't play with my car outside of the track) so I am always thinking about performance instead of convenience.
