Comments: Hello, I have a Traxxas Rustler that I have hopped up everything except for the shocks. As you probably know the Rustler comes with plastic shocks. I was wondering if it really matters if you get metal shocks (Big Bore Shocks) and if it really improves the handling? Response: Great question. The answer is no, an aluminum shock will not perform noticeably better than a plastic one. That is assuming that your plastic shocks are oil filled and a high quality. There are advantages to aluminum shocks, but they are not a big deal. First, aluminum shocks are more durable, they won't break in a bad crash. Second, the hard coated ones are smooth and last a long time wear free. Third, ha ha, there is no third:-) Now, let's look at plastic shocks. They can break easier than aluminum ones but they are also lighter. Many racers change parts to lighter parts that are not as strong. As for the smooth thing, plastic shocks with a plastic piston are extremely smooth too if they are a high quality and the fit between the piston and shock body is good. Plastic on plastic will not wear quickly at all, especially with the damping oil as a lubricant. Overall, aluminum shocks are a little bit better but it would be the last upgrade I make on my car if I already have a good set of plastic ones installed. If you are into nice looking cars than there is a definite advantage to aluminum shocks simply because they look nicer, especially the anodized ones. But, if you have pure performance in mind, save your money and buy a new motor or a spare battery. Even better, go buy a set of shock springs and some shock oil and learn how to tune the suspension on your race car instead of spending money on new shocks. That way you can kick everyone's butt at the track and laugh at them because they have aluminum shocks and you only have plastic ones.
