How Do I Clean My Air Filter?

Comments:  Hi Pro, I have a question about air filters.  I have an HPI .15ss with a slide carb in my Kyosho Inferno 10.  I want to know if the sponge part of my stock air filter can be cleaned and what should I use to clean it.  Also, I thought instead of ordering the foam replacements if I could buy those hair curlers with the foam sponges in them.  I could cut those down and use them as an air filter.  Is this a good idea or are the hobby air filter sponges different?

Thanks

Response: Yes you can clean the foam filter.  I use K&N air filter cleaner, it isn't made for foam filters but it works very well and it won't damage the delicate foam.  You can try to use soap and water but it does not get all of the old oil out.  Many people use the RC car fuel as well to clean the foam elements.  In any case, make sure you rinse out the filter very well with water after cleaning and make sure it is dry before re-oiling the filter with foam filter oil (you can buy this from your hobby shop).

Don't try to use any other material for your filter.  The elements are relatively cheap and they can be reused.  The elements used for RC cars are a specific density that will allow them to provide maximum engine protection while minimizing air restriction.  It is important however, to clean your filter on a regular basis to provide your engine with maximum, clean air flow.
